“Navigating Toward a 2030 Clean and Resilient Mediterranean”
Side event onboard the WWF Blue Panda Boat – 11 June 2025
As the 2025 UN Ocean Conference arrives in Nice, it casts a spotlight on the Mediterranean — one of Earth’s most biodiverse yet threatened seas. With pollution, climate change, and overexploitation placing mounting pressure on this fragile ecosystem, the Mediterranean has become a crucial barometer for our global ocean health and our ability to meet 2030 conservation goals.
On June 11th, aboard the iconic WWF Blue Panda ambassador boat, WWF and the EU’s BlueMissionMed initiative came together to host “Navigating Toward a 2030 Clean and Resilient Mediterranean”. This high-level side event brought together scientists, policymakers, and civil society leaders to present transformative tools and strategies for ocean regeneration.

The Blue Panda — a vessel that unites people and coastlines across the Mediterranean became the perfect setting for launching our new report: “Depolluting the Mediterranean.” that was presented by Fedra Francocci (CNR) and Stefania Campogianni (WWF). This groundbreaking analysis highlights the main sources of marine pollution and provides concrete action paths for governments, industry, and communities. Alessio Satta (WWF) also presented the 2030 Mediterranean Strategy, laying out a bold vision for ecosystem restoration and climate resilience. The event featured powerful insights from EU and UN representatives, including Elisabetta Balzi (European Commission), Ilias Mavroeidis (UNEP/MAP), Rym Benzina (La Saison Bleu), and Francesco Petracchini (CNR).
Together with BlueMissionMed and an exceptional group of regional experts, we focussed our conversation on one core question: How do we turn ambition into real impact?
Here’s what we’re taking home from the discussion:
- Inclusion is non-negotiable: No solution will work unless it involves all Mediterranean voices — especially youth and countries in the southern and eastern Mediterranean. Participation, capacity building, and technology transfer must be part of every policy.
- From Pact to Act: The new EU Pact for the Ocean is a chance to build a Mediterranean Pact that strengthens existing frameworks — and moves us rapidly toward real action.
- The EU Mission for Ocean & Waters and its Lighthouses offer a powerful framework for knowledge and innovation — and we need to ensure these reach local communities, municipalities, and islands where change must happen on the ground.
- Above all, de-polluting the Mediterranean requires everyone: policymakers, scientists, businesses, and civil society. What better place to begin that collaboration than on the deck of the Blue Panda?
The conversation was as inspiring as the setting — but the real work begins now. Let’s turn commitments into actions and give the Mediterranean the future it deserves.

Key highlights included:
