BlueMissionMed Innovation2Society Hackathon: Riding the Waves of Change for a Plastic-Free Future!
On July 9, 2025, the BlueMissionMed Innovation2Society Hackathon gathered 35 passionate educators, science communicators, NGOs, and civil society organisations for a vibrant and interactive online session. The event, organised as part of the Plastic Free July movement, spotlighted how education and communication can catalyse action to restore our ocean and waters, in line with the EU Mission Ocean’s objectives.
The hackathon kicked off with a presentation of key BlueMissionMed tools and resources—from the engaging “Our Blue Treasure” book for children to info-educational installations blending art and science, hands-on games, toolkits for large-scale events and citizen science, and ready-to-use educational formats. These tools were designed to support practitioners in making ocean literacy accessible, fun, and impactful across all age groups.

The first interactive session, “Waves of Inspiration,” offered a dynamic platform for sharing effective approaches to public engagement in ocean and water protection. Participants presented a range of creative initiatives, including theatrical performances, participatory art projects, school outreach programs, and virtual reality experiences. These examples showcased the innovative spirit and dedication of grassroots educators, emphasizing both their impact and potential for replication.
The hackathon concluded with “Hack the Blue Future,” a collaborative session focused on generating fresh ideas to integrate BlueMissionMed resources into ongoing efforts. The room buzzed with energy as participants proposed projects such as interactive exhibitions and learning labs for coastal areas. The session yielded a wealth of concrete, visionary concepts designed to spark broader citizen involvement.

While bringing diverse perspectives and expertise, the Innovation2Society Hackathon proved to be a truly collaborative and energising experience. The dynamic exchange of ideas, tools, and good practices showcased the power of collective intelligence and collaboration in shaping more engaging and effective strategies for blue education. Participants left the session inspired and equipped to bring the BlueMissionMed legacy into their own communities—amplifying impact, fostering ocean stewardship, and co-creating a more sustainable and inclusive blue future.
