Second BlueMissionMed Annual Event in the Context of the Forum Mondial de la Mer-Bizerte!

Second BlueMissionMed annual Event in the Context of the Forum Mondial de la Mer-Bizerte

September 13, 2024, Bizerte, Tunisia

In its 7th edition, the Bizerte Forum will set the agenda for one of the planet’s most iconic and threatened natural treasures, facing a severe crisis endangering its biodiversity and sustainability, the Mediterranean Sea basin. Researchers, international organizations, local authorities, professionals, and think tanks are continually reassessing their projections based on various scientific, climatic, economic, and demographic data. The Mediterranean is on the verge of boiling over and facing a potential extinction of its vibrant ecosystems, which could have devastating consequences for the approximately 520 million people residing in its coastal countries. Yet, despite these challenges, there is hope. Solutions are within reach, and diverse initiatives aimed at preserving and restoring the Mediterranean Lighthouse in its southern regions are currently underway.

The European Union will play a central role in this edition of the Forum: the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and waters by 2030” aims to eradicate pollution, transition the blue economy to zero carbon emissions and circular practices, and foster regional engagement and cooperation through “Lighthouses” in key marine and river basins.

In collaboration with La Saison Bleue, BlueMissionMed will host the Second BlueMissionMed Annual Event during the 7th edition of the World Sea Forum.

The EU’s integrated approach not only targets environmental sustainability but also seeks to balance economic growth with ecological preservation, setting a global standard for marine conservation efforts: for this very reason, it is imperative for the Mediterranean basin to set the tone for this pivotal conference.

Established in 2018 under the presidency of Pascal Lamy and several regional actors, the Forum Mondial de la Mer – Bizerte is the only international event dedicated to maritime issues on the southern shore of the Mediterranean. Over the years, it has become the hub of diverse expressions, from the coastal countries of the Mediterranean and the African continent, symbolizing the collective commitment of Mediterranean nations to preserve this invaluable ecosystem. The Forum has also given birth to OCEAN 2050, an innovative prospective think tank shaping the future of the oceans and a major player in preparing for the United Nations Ocean Conference (Nice, June 2025).
