ITS Description: Aquatic Biologicals is developing sustainable and alternative methods to replace inorganic antibiotic and disinfectant products in aquaculture for preventing or treating bacterial diseases. The main approach involves creating autogenous vaccines, which are made by isolating and using bacteria that cause diseases in aquaculture species. This helps reduce the spread of diseases and build immunity against specific strains. Another method is isolating, characterizing, and propagating bacteriophages to control pathogenic bacteria in aquaculture systems. Phage therapy is used as a natural remedy to fight bacterial infections of species or as a non-chemical method to manage water microbiome in aquaculture systems. Aquatic Biologicals not only provides products to aquaculture companies but also works closely with producers to create customized solutions.

Correspondence with BMM OIR (sectoral priorities, R&I activities, gaps, needs): The adoption of targeted pathogen management methods in aquaculture systems significantly reduces the reliance on chemical treatments and antibiotics, resulting in lower costs and diminished chemical usage. This approach also decreases bacterial organic loads and pollution, owing to reduced mortality rates. Unlike broad-spectrum antibiotics and chemical disinfectants, these methods differentiate between beneficial and harmful bacteria, thereby preserving a balanced and healthy microbiome within aquatic ecosystems and supporting the robust immune systems of the organisms. By specifically targeting pathogens, they help mitigate the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in aquaculture environments. Furthermore, these products and services offer precise prevention or treatment strategies and customized solutions, which support the growth and development of local markets by addressing specific needs and conditions.
