Project: SOS-ZEROPOL2030 – Source to Seas – Zero Pollution 2030
ITS Description: This ITS is the specific result of an in-progress EU-funded initiative aimed at delivering a stakeholder led European Seas zero-pollution framework. Through placing multi-stakeholder engagement at the heart of the project, SOSZEROPOL2030 this holistic framework is co-developed by conducting an interdisciplinary problem analysis, formulation of future scenarios and identification of short and long-term measures to achieve zero pollution. It is aimed to better understand the barriers that compromise successful marine pollution management and stakeholder participation in Europe to identify appropriate intervention points, measures and actions that can support a real transition with focus on human behaviour, socio economics and governance. The framework aims to capitalise upon best practices concerning the implementation of sustainable and effective measures that address marine pollution for priority pollution types in European Seas. It also engages stakeholders through a joint knowledge production process that captures and integrates their experience through a ‘living lab’ approach similar to BMM activities. The framework integrates various policy and legislative instruments to address pollution in European seas, focusing on prevention, reduction, and elimination of pollution sources. Its development includes a series of key documents assisting policymakers in implementing measures for water and sea depollution. SOS-ZEROPOL 2030 is being developed through extensive stakeholder engagement to ensure that it is informed by diverse perspectives and expertise. This also includes EU institutions (e.g. European Commission) to ensure alignment with EU policies and legislation. At the same time, it has been designed to be adaptable to regional and national contexts, allowing for effective implementation and integration into existing policies. Ultimately, it is meant to facilitate better coordination among EU institutions, member states, and stakeholders, ensuring a unified approach to addressing pollution. The project developing the solution will be completed by 2026, being accompanied by several measures for rising its dissemination and uptake.
Correspondence with BMM OIR (sectoral priorities, R&I activities, gaps, needs): The ITS responds to an R&I challenge area by focusing on activities for the development of new commitments and policy framework for sea pollution prevention, with a comprehensive scope on both plastics and chemicals. At the same time, the comprehensive nature of the solution touches upon several policy challenges and action described in different industry sectors of the BMM OIR. For example., for the wastewater and solid waste management sectors, the ITS provides policy instruments for the transition on the national/local level by supporting update of and facilitation of regulations, stimulating adoption of innovative technologies and solutions.
