ITS Description: This app is a multi-layered service with a digitally integrated cloud platform featuring an open, scalable, and modular architecture. It acquires, stores, and aggregates data on marine litter pollution collected digitally by drones and / or other automated devices, or manually by people during beach clean-ups, scuba dives, and port reception facilities. The beach litter monitoring app, capable of generating EMODnet-compatible data, for which VLPF is a provider, represents nearly four years of challenging fieldwork, building on the professional efforts in the H2020 MAELSTROM  and in the HEU REMEDIES projects.

Correspondence with BMM OIR (sectoral priorities, R&I activities, gaps, needs): This ITS responds to a R&I focus area of activity in monitoring & control of beach litter pollution, namely by addressing the development of new technologies for beach litter monitoring. It also responds to the challenge listed in the BMM OIR for solid waste management sectors in responding to the need for new monitoring and assessment strategies to address current/emerging pollution.
